Interior of Women's Building

Comfortable furniture decorated with cozy patterns and cushions are arranged in an inviting circle, encouraging connection and conversation.

The interior of the Women's Building reflects the desires of its founders to establish a welcoming environment for women to gather in a space that truly belonged to them. The building houses three floors of suites originally dedicated to sororities. Suites were decorated with cozy patterns and soft cushions. Comfortable sofas and chairs were arranged in cozy clusters around tables, creating inviting areas where groups could meet, chat, and enjoy refreshments. The arrangement of the furniture emphasizes the Women's Buiding's dedication to intentional inclusivity; unlike the rigid rows of academic classrooms elsewhere on campus, the interior of the Women's Building was not designed for one narrow function, and instead encouraged intimacy and getting to know other individuals. Suites and lounges were used both to strengthen connections and also hosting professional functions and working. Having a comfortable, dedicated space allowed the female students of WashU to become even more involved with campus life, expanding their service projects and interacting more with the community. At the time, the building was novel in its intended purpose and its intended users. The building's comfortable layout with formal lounges, suites, reading rooms, and offices allowed the building to later offer services to a wider range of student groups beyond the sororities that initially founded the building.
